Found this sage quote by Garance Doré on the Club Monaco website today:
"Real chic is something you have even when you are naked. It's a mix of intelligence, kindness, grace and pride. It's a politeness to other people to look good..."
Having been on an old-movie spree lately, one thing I've learned from watching Audrey Hepburn, Debbie Reynolds, et al is that even when they're in the simplest of outfits, they are always presenting themselves in a way that is both proud and considerate of those around them. They are chic - not their clothes. As Garance says, this genuine class means that they'd be chic even if they had nothing on.
Dressing and grooming for others is kind of an outdated notion, but at the same time, it's those little niceties that I think are seriously lacking in our world nowadays. While watching Charade the other night, I couldn't help but wishfully exclaim to my boyfriend "Wouldn't we have such a happier world if everyone took care of themselves and dressed like this? Even if something bad happened to you, at least you'd look good and you'd have something good to look at".
